Early Book Review: The Journey to Reinvention

The Journey to Reinvention is an invitation to live life on your terms, roadmap included.

How I got my hands on an advance copy

I first met Roger when he delivered his farewell talk at IBM. I didn’t know it then, but he’d just been laid off and embarked on yet another reinvention journey. Serendipity brought us together — I was in the middle of completing Blue Core Coaching and someone in my network invited the group to his talk Coaching Employees and Coworkers — and almost two years later it would do so again.

Roger is a man who thrives on stories, connections, and exploring other perspectives. So when he came to London for a speaking engagement, even though we didn’t really know each other he didn’t hesitate to reach out and we met for a long catch up over coffee. It was a great chat, and he somewhat accidently prompted me to start this blog so I could share my Trello magic with him. And of course, as he told me about the book he was writing I offered to help by giving feedback on early chapters of the book.

It lived up to all my expectations, and when we met again for dinner in 2022 during his book tour he kindly gifted me a signed copy.

Is
this book for you?

Have you ever felt stuck, like something doesn’t feel right – maybe a job that you start dreading on Sunday night, a relationship that you start shying away from because it’s become draining, an image of yourself that’s keeping you away from what you want?

Getting unstuck can be a scary proposition. It’s easier said than done to quit your job, break up with your partner or drop that one-sided friendship.

If you’re tired of wondering “what if?”, tired of feeling stuck in a life that is no longer aligned to your values and who you are, reinvention is the name of the game, and as an expert at reinventing himself Roger walks you by the hand through this sometimes daunting journey.

From how to determine whether and what kind of reinvention is right for you, to strategies for how to successfully launch large and small reinventions, to how to stick it out when the going gets rough, this book teaches you how to reinvent yourself. Most importantly, it makes you believe you can.

My
favourite insights

The Power of Necessity

When motivated by necessity, we often find solutions that would never have occurred to us before. We find the motivation to act, the impulse to try things and get creative if that’s what it takes.

Any seasoned procrastinator like me will attest to the power of creating necessity via deadlines to get our work done. But what if you also applied this to your life?

Test your ideas (without leaving your day job)
One way to generate opportunities, explore new paths and dig deep into what actually motivates and fulfils you is to experiment. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to quit your job to start a new business from scratch. If you’re not happy and fulfilled at your current job, try experimenting – doing a project in a different area, doing volunteering in your spare time to try out a new skill, taking a course. If you’re not fulfilled with your current life, try experimenting too – switch up your routine, your diet, your outlook, and see what sparks a deeper interest and what ultimately doesn’t work for you.
We’re not just reinventing our careers – any area of your life is game. Health, relationships, finances… anywhere you are not living life on your terms.
What happens if you don’t? The real question that will propel you. What is the cost of not trying? And remember, traditional “success” doesn’t always equal happiness; it’s especially hard to change paths when you are good at what you do, and “successful”, but unfulfilled.

The power of clarity

Experiments and taking action bring clarity, and clarity propels us forward. One of the biggest benefits of engaging with a coach is the clarity it brings, something I myself have experienced from both the coach and coachee side.

And these two quotes blew my mind. Because they are so obviously true, but somehow very easy to ignore or forget in the hustle and bustle of daily life:

“Only you can decide what matters most to you.”

“Ultimately, your mission is to find or create an opportunity that is aligned with your values, passion and purpose.”
